Welcome to my newsletter “Things We Love.” You are in the right place if you want to escape, at least for a bit, the negativity and chaos in the world and find weekly stories of inspiration, kindness, joy and love—human beings at their best. Carefully curated by an artist with eclectic interests and radar for the good that life offers…
I am Pam Smilow, a painter/printmaker/occasional ceramicist/mother and most recently a writer. Things We Love is a labor of love for me and in many ways a diary of my life and what inspires me now and what has inspired me over my many years. I have always been a reader, a researcher, and curious about all kinds of things and those interests are reflected here. I also love to sharer my passions with others so I hope you come along for the ride…
In the words of interviewer Frank Matheis, ”Pam Smilow, who lives and works between Manhattan and Maine, is unconventional in both her creative approach and in business. She is a successful, self-supporting artist of considerable national and international stature and over decades has built a prosperous business while thinking outside of standard norms. Her network of clients is international and nationwide, from New York to California, Japan to Denmark and beyond. Brought up in the only fully realized Frank Lloyd Wright community outside New York City, daughter of a prominent mid-century modern furniture designer, Smilow sees the room as an extension of her palette and likes to work with architects and interior designers to find the right piece of art to fit a space. That understanding of the “place and space” has helped her to be successful, but her art is not mere decoration. Her commitment to her soul is uncompromising.
Smilow’s paintings are transformative dream landscapes, abstract, visionary, full of recognizable symbols and nature, and powerfully expressive. Her art is accessible--complicated, yet simple. She has a clear mission: “I seek to add a bit of beauty and joy into the world, knowing that environment has a big effect on one’s psyche—and living with beauty and inspiration uplifts us all, knowingly or not, on an everyday basis.” —
